Openomy: Share files…now with open-ness?

May 10, 2006

We’ve all jived over the many file sharing and file hosting services that spawned after the whole Web 2.0 thingy came into context. Once such contender is Openomy, the file sharing service that guarantees openness in sharing. What ? Sharing does mean openness doesn’t it? How can we make it even more open?? Well one thing you might do is to make the source-code available (or as I call it, the “webcode” available heh heh). Thats what the guys ( I think it should be just one “guy”, but whatever) at openomy did. They released the API of their service. This is a smart move I must say to differentiate yourself from the common traits. The API is easy to implement as well. There are lost of other useful features like searching files by tags instead of a hierarchal search that might take days to perform. The Openomy creator had this synopsis:

What is Openomy?
Openomy is an online file system. You can store files on Openomy and access them from any computer. Openomy organises files and users via tags (as opposed to folders). You can choose to keep your files guarded by Openomy, or allow certain outside applications (of your choice) to do new and interesting things with your data.

I’ve been using openomy for the last couple of days and I’ve found it awkwardly simple and easy to use. But offcourse, it doesn’t look much like the other colourful and flamboyant web 2.0 children, but it still does it work fine.

There’s also an option to create web application via openomy, share them or get a unique “application id”. So check out openomy today. Who knows, you might like it too… and its wayyyy open+ they’ve just released some new features.
